Reef Breaks, Currents & Sea Urchins: Surfer Safety Guide for Guadeloupe
Reef Breaks, Currents & Sea Urchins: Surfer Safety Guide for Guadeloupe
Guadeloupe offers paradise wave conditions, but respect for the tropical ocean environment is paramount. Here is your essential safety manual before paddling into Caribbean breaks.
1. Reef Hazards & Sea Urchins (Oursins)
- The Atlantic side is bordered by living coral reefs. Never put your feet down while surfing reef breaks.
- If you step on a black sea urchin, do not dig vigorously with a needle. Soak the area in hot water and white vinegar or lime juice to dissolve the spines naturally.
2. Strong Tidal Rips
During heavy groundswells at Le Moule and Anse Bertrand, immense volumes of water drain through narrow reef passes (les passes).
- Never fight a direct rip current heading seaward.
- Paddle parallel to the reef until you reach the shoulder or deep channel where the water settles.
3. Tropical Sun & Hydration
The Caribbean UV index routinely hits 11+. Use eco-friendly, reef-safe mineral sunscreen (Zinc Oxide / Titanium Dioxide) and drink plenty of fresh coconut water and electrolytes between sessions.
